- What’s here: Three cocktails, each with a single-serve and a batch recipe
- Make ahead: Batch the spirit-forward parts a day ahead; add anything fizzy or citrus to order
- The one thing that matters: The host should not be shaking drinks one at a time during dinner prep

- Pitcher. For mixing the cocktail in batches
- Measuring cups. For the spirits and mixers
- Long spoon. For stirring with fruit and ice

Cranberry whiskey sour
Tart, bright, and the best partner for a heavy plate.
- 2 oz bourbon or rye
- 1 oz fresh lemon juice
- ¾ oz cranberry syrup (equal parts cranberry juice and sugar, simmered 5 minutes)
- Optional: ½ oz egg white for foam
- Garnish: 3 fresh cranberries, an expressed lemon peel
Shake hard with ice (dry-shake first without ice if using egg white). Strain into a coupe or over fresh ice.
Batch for 10: 2½ cups bourbon, 1¼ cups lemon juice, 1 cup cranberry syrup. Combine and refrigerate. Add ice and stir to order; skip the egg white in a batch, or add a spoon of aquafaba per drink.
Apple cider bourbon
The easy crowd-pleaser, more refreshing than it sounds, and low effort.
- 2 oz bourbon
- 4 oz fresh apple cider
- ½ oz lemon juice
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Top with a splash of ginger beer (optional)
- Garnish: apple slice, cinnamon stick
Build over ice in a tall glass and stir.
Batch for 10: 2½ cups bourbon, 5 cups cider, 1¼ cups lemon juice, 1 tablespoon bitters in a pitcher, refrigerated. Pour over ice; top each glass with ginger beer if using.
Maple old fashioned
For the whiskey drinkers, a classic old fashioned with maple syrup standing in for the sugar.
- 2 oz bourbon or rye
- ¼ oz real maple syrup (grade A dark)
- 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters
- Garnish: expressed orange peel, brandied cherry
Stir all with ice for 20 to 30 seconds and strain over one large cube.
Batch for 10: 2½ cups bourbon, ⅓ cup maple syrup, 2 teaspoons Angostura, 1 teaspoon orange bitters, plus ½ cup water for dilution (a stirred drink needs it). Refrigerate; pour over a big cube.
Batching and hosting notes
- Batch spirit-forward parts a day ahead; add citrus the morning of, and anything carbonated to each glass.
- Pre-dilute stirred drinks (the old fashioned) with water, about 20 to 25%, since they will not get diluted by a long stir.
- Set out a station: the batch in a pitcher on ice, a bucket of ice, glasses, garnishes in bowls, and the mixers. Then leave it.
- Have a good non-alcoholic option at the same station, see our Thanksgiving mocktail and non-alcoholic drinks. And make sure anyone driving has a plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best cocktail to serve at Thanksgiving?
Something with enough acidity or bitterness to cut through rich food, a cranberry whiskey sour, an apple cider bourbon, or a maple old fashioned. All three batch well so you are not making drinks individually.
Can I make Thanksgiving cocktails ahead?
Yes. Batch the spirit and syrup components a day ahead and refrigerate. Add citrus the morning of and anything carbonated to each glass as you pour.
How do I batch a cocktail for a crowd?
Multiply the recipe, leave out ice and anything fizzy, and for stirred drinks add about 20% water to account for the dilution you would normally get from stirring. Keep it cold and pour over ice.
What should I serve people who aren’t drinking?
A proper mocktail or a non-alcoholic punch at the same station, not just soda. It matters more than people think.
The bottom line
Pick one or two of these, batch what keeps, pre-dilute the stirred one, and set up a self-serve station with a good non-alcoholic option beside it. Then go finish the turkey.
Save it for the batch ratios, that is what lets you host without tending bar.
